Dr. Hamilton: “I set up Hamilton House in the late 80s, and my initial plan was to have a small, lovely, intimate consulting suite with a very friendly atmosphere, a home-like atmosphere, with a garden outlook and so forth, with the possibility of doing a few small procedures like excision of moles and excision of tiny skin cancers. At that time, I was doing all of my surgery except for the minor ones in hospital. There are all sorts of bureaucracies associated with putting patients into hospital, so we started to do bigger procedures. In parallel with that, we recruited more professionally qualified nursing staff. We equipped our operating theatre and sterilizing room and so forth, and we started to do bigger cases, initially cases under intravenous sedation with the anesthetist present. Then we progressed on from there, having obtained a license from the South Australian and Federal Government, and we started to do general anesthetic cases. And this evolution actually was a revolution for my practice. It went from 98 percent hospital-based to 100 percent day surgery-based. So no longer do I go to hospitals, I do everything here, and the beauty of it, of course, is I’ve got my own lovely staff who are dedicated to looking after the welfare of patients, and they can hold their hand right the way through from the initial nurse consultation we might have for a breast enlargement patient through to consultation with me, and booking for surgery. The same girls help me in the operating theatre, the same girls will be involved in the recovery room after operation, and they also help me with the aftercare of the patient. We get a lot of feedback from patients saying how fabulous the whole process was, no problems, no complaints, the staff are just wonderful, surgery was well-executed, with good results, and that’s what we’re all about.”
